  • Got instructions for Essay 7.
  • Went to LCC library to work on Essay 7. Tasks: Create a Wikipedia account. Then on your Wikipedia user page, write and save the first sentence of your Wikipedia article. Here is an example.
Homework for Wednesday 7/9
  • First draft of Essay 7 (intro paragraph for Wikipedia article about your topic). Post that paragraph to your Wikipedia user page and bring a hard copy to class.
  • Bring two Wikipedia articles to class. These articles should be similar to the topic you are writing about for Essay 7. For instance, if your topic is about an architect like the example above, you should bring two Wikipedia articles about other architects like this one.

Homework for Tuesday 7/8

  • Essay 5 (annotated bibliography) final draft is due. The essay should have 15 entries and be in alpha order. Each entry should include info about each source in correct MLA format. Each entry should also include a 100-125 word paragraph that summarizes and evaluates the source. These paragraphs should be edited for correct sentence skills.
  • Edit the Wikipedia article about your high school. An "edit" may be adding a word, phrase, or sentence; deleting a word, phrase, or sentence; rewording a phrase or sentence; adding a link; etc. To make an edit, [1] click on the "edit this page" tab at the top of the Wikipedia article about your high school. [2] You will be then taken to the editing page. Make your edit. [3] In the "Edit Summary" box, type your initials followed by a colon (:) and then briefly describe your edit. (4) Click on the "Save Page" button.

Today in class

  • Wrote 3 to 4 sentence summaries of what Essay 5 is about. We shared these in class.
  • Discussed 2nd drafts of Essay 5 (annotated bibliography).
  • Received and read packet of essays written in class on Tuesday. Score each essay on a 0 to 5 scale. We will discuss our scores in class tomorrow. This is prep for Essay 4, which will be done in class tomorrow.
  • Went to the library to continue research for Essay 5.
Homework for Thursday 7/3
  • Continue work on Essay 5. The 3rd draft (with 8 entries) is due on 7/3.

  • Turned in Editing Logs for errors made on Essay 3
  • Received packet of all Essay 5 drafts to read and respond to for homework.
  • Did some practice for Essay 4, by planning and writing an essay in class today. Essay 4 will be written in class on Thursday. You will have 25 minutes to write it.
  • Worked on a Works Cited list, based on the activity on p. 398 of Langan.
Homework for Wednesday 7/2
  • Read all Essay 5 drafts in packet and write your comments on them (i.e. what you think is good and what you think needs work).
  • Continue work on Essay 5. The final draft will be due on Monday 7/7.

  • Received the Instructions for Essay 5 (Annotated bibliography). Went to the library to find a topic for Essay 7 (research paper to be published on Wikipedia). Topics had to be chosen from Wikipedia's list of requested topics.
  • Had individual conferences with Andrew and Mr. Turner about Essay 3.

  • Talked about unity. Read the essay on p. 141 of Langan and identified sentences that needed to be taken out to improve unity.
  • Spent time coming up with a thesis and outline for a sample writing prompt.
  • Wrote 25-minute in-class essay as practice for Essay 2.
  • Received packets of Drafts of Essay 3 and of the in-class essays written today
Homework for Tuesday 6/24
  • Read all the drafts of Essay 3. On each draft, write (directly on each draft) things you liked about it and things that could be done to improve it. Be ready to share your comments in class.
  • Read all the in-class essays in the packet you received at the end of class today. Score each one on a 0 to 5 scale. See pp 5-7 in the handout you received today for explanation of the criteria for scoring. This is prep for Essay 2.

  • Submit a one-page (about 250 words) summary of the wikipedia article about your school. Refer to Langan 349-350 for guidance. Type. Double-space.
  • Turn in two run-on sentences of your own. Analyze and discuss these sentences in class.
  • Turn in a paragraph (topic of your choice) of 5 to 6 sentences. Two of the "sentences" should be fragments. Analyze and discuss these paragraphs in class. Do an activity to practice writing and practice applying what we have learned about run-ons and fragments.
  • Discuss how to respond to drafts of your peers (handout). Practice responding to one draft in class.
  • Discuss analysis of Wikipedia article about your school (handout).
  • Discuss the four main steps to writing strong papers.
